When thieves broke in to a construction site in Merseyside and got away with valuable building materials, the site management team discovered that they couldn’t be traced because of blind spots in the CCTV coverage. The construction company considered employing two security guards to patrol the site at night to prevent a recurrence of the incident……until they discovered Direct Virtual Guard.
The site manager explained: “We had invested in a very reliable CCTV system but, because it was a fixed system, it didn’t cover the whole site. The thieves must have been watching the site for some time because they made their move during the night when we’d received a delivery that day and the materials were out of sight of the cameras. At first it seemed like employing security guards would be the only way to tackle the problem but when we discovered that Direct Virtual Guard could be installed so quickly, moved around site and relied upon to alert a response team in real time, it was clear that the system would provide the most cost-effective and efficient alternative.”
A wireless system that combines motion detector technology with integrated night vision cameras and infra-red illumination, Direct Virtual Guide is activated as soon as an intruder enters the site and sends a 10 second video clip to a remote monitoring station via a reliable GSM connection. At the remote monitoring centre, trained security professionals view the clip and alert the police and/or nominated emergency contacts, to get a fast response to site.
Peter Lewis, managing director of Direct Virtual Guard commented: “Conventional CCTV is much too expensive for many sites, particularly larger sites where a complex installation may be required. It’s also inflexible because it’s not only static but can create added issues due to the cabling, power generator and phone line required for a hard-wired system. Conversely, Direct Virtual Guard can be installed in less than an hour, moved around site to focus on vulnerable areas and needs no power source or phone line. What’s more, it can provide security cost savings of up to 87% for the average construction site….which is why it’s proved so popular, with more than 150,000 systems now installed in the UK alone.”
At the Merseyside site, six Direct Virtual Guard units were installed targeting the most vulnerable areas of the site and providing the most wide-ranging field of vision. These were then repositioned as required during the programme as the site’s needs changed. There was one further break in at the site three months after the contractor had switched to Direct Virtual Guard and the thieves were apprehended running from the site within minutes as a direct result of the alarm raised by the Direct Virtual Guard remote monitoring centre.
The site manager added: “The cost of employing security guards would have impacted significantly on our overheads but we couldn’t risk another break in because that would not only have cost implications but could have delayed the programme. Direct Virtual Guard was the perfect solution, giving us the peace of mind that comes with knowing the site is well protected while reducing our security costs. The fact that Direct Virtual Guard is classed as a temporary system even made it tax deductible too, helping increase the financial benefits of the system still further.”
